How to Get Your NDIS Worker Screening Check in Western Australia

If you work — or plan to work — for a Registered NDIS provider in WA, you are required by law to hold a current NDIS Worker Screening clearance. This guide walks you through every step of the process.

Important: It is an offence under the NDIS Worker Screening Act to work in a risk-assessed role without a valid clearance or a pending application. You must have submitted your application and had your identity verified before starting work, unless you have confirmed with your employer that you are eligible to commence on a pending application.

1

Confirm Your Role Requires the Check

Under the National Disability Insurance Scheme (Worker Screening) Act 2020, you must hold an NDIS Check clearance if you work in a risk-assessed role for a Registered NDIS provider. This includes:

  • Key personnel such as management and operational positions
  • Roles where normal duties include direct delivery of specified supports or services to a person with disability
  • Roles likely to require more than incidental contact with people with disability — including physically touching a participant, building rapport as an integral part of the role, or having contact with multiple participants
  • Contractors and volunteers in the above roles

Tip: If you are unsure whether your role is risk-assessed, ask your employer before you begin work. It is an offence to work in a risk-assessed role without a valid clearance or a pending application.

2

Read the Application Materials First

Before starting your application, the WA Screening Unit strongly recommends you read the application process materials on the NDIS Check Resources page on the WA Government website. These documents explain what to expect, what documents you need, and how the assessment works.

Tip: Visit wa.gov.au and search "NDIS Check resources" to find the current guidance documents before you begin.

3

Gather Your Four Identity Documents

You must provide four identity documents across three categories. You cannot complete your application without all four.

  • Commencement of Identity Document — provide one (e.g. Australian birth certificate, Australian citizenship certificate, or passport)
  • Primary Use in the Community Document — provide one (e.g. Australian driver's licence, learner's permit, or proof of age card)
  • Secondary Use in the Community Documents — provide two (e.g. Medicare card, bank card, utility bill, or government-issued photo ID)

Tip: If any of your documents are in a different name (e.g. maiden name), you must also provide evidence of the name change, such as a change of name certificate from the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages.

4

Create a DoTDirect Account and Start Your Application

The NDIS Check application is completed online through the DoTDirect portal, managed by the WA Department of Transport. Go to the DoTDirect website and log in or register for an account. Once logged in, select "NDIS" in the top toolbar to begin your application.

Tip: DoTDirect is the WA Government's online services portal — not myGovID. Go to online.transport.wa.gov.au to access it.

5

Complete and Submit the Online Application Form

Fill in the online application form in DoTDirect. You will need to:

  • Confirm your personal details — full name, date of birth, and address
  • Provide details of your employer (the Registered NDIS provider)
  • Self-disclose any relevant criminal history or findings as required
  • Upload or enter your identity document details
  • Submit the completed form online
6

Attend a Driver and Vehicle Services Centre in Person

After submitting your online application, you must attend a Department of Transport Driver and Vehicle Services (DVS) Centre in person to have your identity verified and complete the process. Bring your original identity documents — copies are not accepted. Metropolitan DVS Centres include:

  • Butler — 225 Butler Blvd
  • Cannington — 1480 Albany Highway
  • Joondalup — 65 Boas Avenue
  • Mandurah — Corner Ranceby Avenue and Pinjarra Road
  • Midland — Unit 4, 5 Clayton Street
  • Mirrabooka — Unit 13, 1 Chesterfield Road
  • Rockingham — 37 McNicholl Street
  • Success — Unit 3, 660 Beeliar Drive
  • West Perth — Troode Street and Plaistowe Mews

Tip: If you cannot travel to a DVS Centre, you may be eligible for "alternate lodgement" identity verification. You can request this as part of your online application in DoTDirect.

7

Pay the Application Fee

The application fee is paid as part of the process. Current fees as of October 2025 are:

  • $145 for paid employees
  • $11 for volunteers and unpaid workers (including students on unpaid placement)
  • $80 for eligible concession card holders (Health Care Card, Pensioner Concession Card, Commonwealth Seniors Health Card, or other Centrelink/DVA concession cards)

Tip: Application fees are generally non-refundable regardless of the outcome. Check with your employer — some providers reimburse the fee for paid workers.

8

Commence Work on a Pending Application (if eligible)

In WA, you may be able to start work in a risk-assessed role while your application is being processed, provided all of the following conditions are met:

  • You have completed the application and your identity has been verified at a DVS Centre
  • Your employer has verified you as an NDIS worker in the Screening Unit system (you will receive an email when this happens)
  • Your application has not been withdrawn or cancelled
  • You have no previous exclusion
  • You have not been issued with an interim bar based on your criminal record or other relevant information

Tip: If an interim bar has been issued, you cannot work while your application is being processed. Processing times vary — some applications are completed within days, others can take weeks or longer.

9

Receive Your Clearance

The Screening Unit will notify you by email of the outcome of your application. If approved, you will receive an NDIS Worker Screening Clearance that is valid for five years and recognised across all states and territories in Australia. Your employer will be notified automatically. Keep a copy of your clearance certificate for your records.

Tip: Your clearance is linked to you personally — not to your employer. If you change jobs or work for multiple providers, the same clearance applies across Australia.

After Your Clearance

Keeping Your Clearance Current

Renew before expiry

Your clearance lasts five years. You will receive a reminder before it expires. Apply for renewal early to avoid any gap in your clearance.

Report changes

You must notify the WA Screening Unit if you are charged with or convicted of a relevant offence while holding a clearance.

Clearance is portable

Your clearance is linked to you, not your employer. If you change jobs or work for multiple providers, the same clearance applies.

Continuous monitoring

Even after you receive your clearance, the Screening Unit monitors your status. Your clearance can be reviewed at any time if new information comes to light.
